Kudos to the students who braved the cold and snowy evening to attend our final workshop of the year! This session was our longest yet, lasting nearly two hours. Not only did we cover some of the theoretical foundations, but as a team, we executed a practical shoot. Together, we shot a coffee-making sequence with each student taking turns in various roles, including camera operator, assistant director (AD), and second assistant camera (2nd AC).
Here’s a quick rundown of what our students learned during the theory section:
The 180-degree rule and why/when it’s used in cinematography (here’s a video on when to break it)
The components & information on a slate
Key camera movements
The relationship between frame rate & shutter speed
Crash course on focal lengths
What we did during the practical shoot:
Used a shot list to organize the sequence of shots to be filmed
Practiced what call-outs to make when slating
Familiarized themselves with gimbal settings
Implemented various camera movements using the gimbal
Put best handheld filming practices into action
What are AVI Student Workshops? Every first Wednesday of the month, our studio hosts a free workshop for students ages 16-20 looking to pursue the arts, specifically in film, photography, and digital media. Here you can explore, experiment and add to your portfolio!
Our next monthly workshop is Intro to Post-Production: Footage, Logging & Sequences on January 1st. This is an online session open to anyone!
